Solar panels, batteries, heat pumps and solar thermal can all reduce the amount of energy you need to buy.
However, that does not mean every home needs them.
A technology that works well in one property may make little sense in another.
Your home is different.
So is the way you use energy.
That is why the best place to start is not with the technology.
Start with your home.
What Are You Trying to Achieve?
Before looking at solar panels or heat pumps, ask yourself one simple question:
What do I want to achieve?
Perhaps you want to:
- Lower your energy bills
- Replace an old heating system
- Reduce your use of gas
- Generate your own electricity
- Prepare for an electric car
- Make better use of a smart tariff
- Reduce your carbon emissions
You may have several goals.
Once you know what they are, it becomes much easier to decide which technologies are worth considering.
Deal With Energy Waste First
Before generating more energy, look at the energy you already use.
For example, a home may be losing unnecessary heat through a poorly insulated loft.
Installing a heat pump does not stop that heat escaping.
Likewise, solar panels do not make an inefficient heating system more efficient.
Therefore, it often makes sense to deal with simple problems first.
These might include:
- Poor insulation
- Draughts
- Heating controls
- Unnecessary electricity use
- Poor ventilation
This does not mean your home must be perfectly insulated before you install renewable technology.
It simply means:
Do not pay to produce energy that you could easily avoid wasting.
Could Solar PV Work for You?
Solar PV generates electricity from sunlight.
Therefore, start by looking at the property.
Consider:
- Roof space
- Roof condition
- Direction
- Shading
Then look at your electricity use.
If you use plenty of electricity during daylight hours, you may be able to use more of your solar generation directly.
If most of your electricity use happens in the evening, you may export more during the day and import electricity later.
Neither situation automatically makes solar a bad choice.
However, it changes how useful the electricity may be to you.
The important question is not simply:
“How much will my panels generate?”
Also ask:
“When will they generate it, and what will happen to that electricity?”
Would a Battery Help?
You do not need a battery to have solar panels.
A battery simply allows you to store electricity and use it later.
That could mean storing surplus solar electricity during the day and using it in the evening.
However, batteries can also charge from the grid.
This may be useful with tariffs that offer cheaper electricity at certain times.
So, think about what the battery would actually do in your home.
Would it regularly:
- Store surplus solar electricity?
- Reduce expensive electricity imports?
- Make better use of cheaper tariff periods?
If so, it may be useful.
However, a larger battery is not automatically better.
The right battery is one you can make good use of.
Could a Heat Pump Work for You?
A heat pump is a little different.
Before choosing one, you need to understand how much heat your home requires.
This is why a proper heat-loss calculation matters.
It helps determine:
- How much heat each room needs
- The size of the heat pump
- Whether radiators need changing
- Suitable heating temperatures
The aim is to design the whole heating system properly.
Therefore, do not simply ask:
“What size heat pump replaces my boiler?”
A better question is:
“How much heat does my home actually need?”
Air Source or Ground Source?
Both systems move heat into your home.
The main difference is where they collect it.
An air source heat pump takes heat from the outside air.
A ground source heat pump collects heat through pipes buried in the ground.
Ground temperatures are more stable. However, ground source systems need suitable land, trenches or boreholes.
Air source systems are generally easier to install.
Therefore, the most efficient option on paper may not be the most practical option for your property.
The best technology is the one that works well in your home.
What About Solar Thermal?
Solar thermal uses sunlight to help provide hot water.
It may be worth considering if you have:
- Suitable roof space
- Good exposure to sunlight
- Regular hot-water demand
- A suitable hot-water cylinder
However, solar thermal and solar PV may compete for the same roof space.
So, ask what that space could do for you.
Would you benefit more from solar thermal?
Would extra solar PV be more useful?
Could solar PV help power a heat pump instead?
There is no answer that works for every home.
Think of Your Home as One Energy System
This is where everything we have learned starts to come together.
Imagine a home with:
Solar PV + Battery + Heat Pump + Smart Tariff
During the day, solar panels generate electricity.
The home uses what it needs.
Surplus electricity can charge the battery.
Meanwhile, some solar electricity may help run the heat pump.
Later, when solar generation falls, the battery can provide some of the electricity the home needs.
At other times, cheaper grid electricity may be available through a smart tariff.
The technologies are now working together.
However, this does not mean every home should have all of them.
More Technology Is Not Always Better
Every additional system costs money.
It may also need maintenance and, eventually, replacement.
Therefore, avoid adding technology simply because you can.
A simple system that matches your needs can be better than a complicated system that does not.
Ask:
What problem will this technology solve?
If you cannot answer that clearly, think carefully before buying it.
When You Use Energy Matters
Your annual energy use is important.
However, it does not tell the whole story.
Imagine two homes that each use:
3,500 kWh of electricity a year
One uses most of its electricity during the day.
The other uses most in the evening.
Their annual electricity use is identical.
Yet solar panels and batteries could work very differently in those homes.
The same applies to:
- Electric vehicles
- Heat pumps
- Hot water
- Smart tariffs
So, look at both:
How much energy you use
and:
When you use it
A smart meter or energy app can make this much easier to understand.
Think About the Future
Your home may use energy differently in a few years.
You might buy an electric car.
You may replace a gas boiler with a heat pump.
Perhaps you will start working from home.
The number of people living in the property could also change.
Therefore, do not design everything around today’s energy use without considering what may happen next.
You do not need to predict the future perfectly.
Just consider changes you already think are likely.
Make the Numbers Relatable
Renewable energy quotations can contain plenty of technical figures.
For example:
- kW
- kWh
- kWp
- COP
- SCOP
We have explained these throughout this section.
However, you do not need to become an engineer to make a good decision.
Turn the numbers into everyday questions.
Instead of asking:
“What is the battery capacity?”
ask:
“How much of my normal electricity use could it cover?”
Instead of:
“What is the solar system’s kWp?”
ask:
“How much electricity could it generate at my home?”
Instead of:
“What COP can this heat pump achieve?”
ask:
“How much electricity is my heating likely to use over a year?”
Technical figures become much more useful when they answer real questions.
Be Careful With Savings Claims
You may be told that a system could save hundreds or even thousands of pounds.
That may be possible.
However, ask how the saving was calculated.
For example:
- What energy price was used?
- How much solar generation was assumed?
- How much electricity will be exported?
- What export price was used?
- What tariff was assumed?
- What heat-pump performance was expected?
Small changes in these assumptions can change the result.
Therefore:
Do not just ask for the savings figure. Ask what is behind it.
A Simple Payback Example
Suppose a system costs:
£8,000
It is expected to save or earn:
£800 a year
A simple calculation gives:
£8,000 ÷ £800 = 10 years
So, the simple payback would be around ten years.
However, this is only an estimate.
Energy prices can change.
Performance can vary.
Equipment may need maintenance or replacement.
Therefore, payback is useful for comparison, but it is not a promise.
Get More Than One Quote
Renewable technology can be a major investment.
So, compare more than the price.
Look at:
- Equipment
- System size
- Expected performance
- Warranties
- Installation
- Aftercare
- Savings assumptions
Most importantly, ask questions.
A good installer should be able to explain why a particular system suits your property.
You should understand what you are buying before you sign anything.
A Simple Way to Make the Decision
