Winter Heating Payments and Other Help

Extra Help With Heating Costs During Winter

Winter can be the most expensive time of year for energy.

The heating stays on for longer. Also, colder weather means your home loses heat more quickly.

For some households, extra financial help is available.

However, the support you can get depends on several things.

These include:

  • Where you live
  • Your age
  • The benefits you receive
  • Your household
  • Your income

The names of the schemes can also be confusing.

So, let’s make them easier to understand.

If You Live in Scotland

Scotland has its own winter heating payments.

The three main ones are:

Winter Heating Payment

Child Winter Heating Payment

Pension Age Winter Heating Payment

They are different payments.

Therefore, it is worth understanding each one.

Winter Heating Payment

Winter Heating Payment helps some people on a low income with their heating costs.

For winter 2026–27, the payment is:

£62

It is paid by Social Security Scotland.

However, it is not available to everyone.

You need to meet the rules for the payment.

So, check your current benefit and household details before assuming that you qualify.

Does It Need to Be Freezing Outside?

No.

This is an important difference between Scotland and other parts of the UK.

Winter Heating Payment is not based on the temperature in your local area.

Therefore, you do not have to wait for a spell of very cold weather before the payment can apply.

If you qualify, the payment is based on your circumstances rather than a local temperature reading.

That makes the Scottish system different from Cold Weather Payments elsewhere in the UK.

Child Winter Heating Payment

Scotland also has Child Winter Heating Payment.

This provides extra help towards winter heating costs for families with a child or young person who gets certain disability benefits.

For 2026–27, the payment is:

£265.50

The amount rose from £255.80 in 2025–26.

The payment is designed to help with the extra heating costs that can come with caring for a disabled child or young person.

More Than One Child?

The payment is linked to the eligible child or young person.

Therefore, a household with more than one eligible child may receive more than one payment.

This is different from some household energy schemes, where only one payment is made to the whole home.

So, if you care for more than one disabled child or young person, check each person’s position.

Pension Age Winter Heating Payment

Scotland also has Pension Age Winter Heating Payment.

This has replaced the UK Winter Fuel Payment for people living in Scotland.

It helps people of State Pension age with winter heating costs.

For winter 2026–27, payments range from:

£105.55 to £316.70

The amount depends on your age and household circumstances.

Most people who qualify will receive the payment automatically.

However, a small number of people need to apply.

Who Can Get Pension Age Winter Heating Payment?

For winter 2026–27, the main age rule is simple.

You must have been born on or before:

27 June 1960

You must also have lived in Scotland on at least the final day of the qualifying week.

For 2026–27, that week is:

21 to 27 September 2026

There are some exceptions.

Therefore, it is worth using the official eligibility checker if you are unsure.

What If Your Income Is Higher?

There is another important rule.

If your personal income is over:

£35,000

you can still receive Pension Age Winter Heating Payment.

However, HMRC will later recover it through the tax system.

Importantly, the £35,000 figure applies to individual income, not the combined income of a couple.

So, receiving the payment does not always mean you will ultimately keep it.

When Is It Paid?

Most eligible people do not need to apply.

Payments for winter 2026–27 start from November 2026 and continue through the winter.

You should receive a letter telling you how much you will get.

The money normally goes into the same bank account used for your State Pension or Social Security Scotland benefits.

What If You Live in England or Wales?

The system is different.

People in England and Wales do not receive Scotland’s Pension Age Winter Heating Payment.

Instead, eligible older people may receive the UK Winter Fuel Payment.

For winter 2026–27, this can provide between:

£100 and £300

The amount depends on age and household circumstances.

Most eligible people receive it automatically.

Payments are normally made in November or December.

What About Higher Incomes?

The same £35,000 income rule applies to the Winter Fuel Payment.

If your personal income is above £35,000, HMRC will recover the payment through tax.

Again, this is based on your own income.

Your partner’s income is not added to yours for this test.

What About Northern Ireland?

Winter Fuel Payment also applies in Northern Ireland.

For winter 2026–27, the main age rule is the same.

You need to have been born on or before 27 June 1960, subject to the other eligibility rules.

However, other forms of energy support in Northern Ireland can be different.

Therefore, always check the rules for where you live.

What Are Cold Weather Payments?

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, some people receiving certain benefits may also qualify for a Cold Weather Payment.

Unlike Scotland’s Winter Heating Payment, this help is linked to the weather.

A payment can become due when the temperature in your area is recorded, or forecast, at an average of 0°C or below for seven days in a row.

Therefore, this is help triggered by a period of very cold weather.

Scotland uses Winter Heating Payment instead.

Can You Get More Than One Type of Help?

Sometimes, yes.

Winter heating support does not mean you cannot receive other help.

For example, you may also qualify for:

  • Warm Home Discount
  • Energy grants
  • Supplier support
  • Fuel vouchers
  • Fuel Bank help
  • Help with energy debt
  • Home energy improvements

Therefore, do not stop checking after finding one payment.

One scheme may help with your winter heating.

Another may help with your electricity bill.

Meanwhile, another could help improve your home.

Do You Need to Apply?

Many winter payments are automatic.

However, do not assume that every payment will arrive automatically.

For example, most people receiving Scotland’s Pension Age Winter Heating Payment do not need to apply.

Yet some people do.

For winter 2026–27, applications can be needed in certain cases, such as where someone has deferred their State Pension. The deadline is normally 31 March 2027.

Therefore, if you think you qualify but receive nothing, check.

Watch Out for Scams

Winter payments can also attract scams.

You may receive a text or email saying:

“Claim your winter heating payment now.”

Be careful.

Many genuine payments are made automatically.

Also, government departments will not need you to hand over passwords because of an unexpected text message.

If you are unsure, do not follow the link.

Instead, visit the official government or Social Security Scotland service yourself.

A Simple Winter Help Check

When winter approaches, ask yourself:

1. Do I receive benefits?

Some payments are linked to certain benefits.

2. Is there a disabled child or young person in the household?

In Scotland, Child Winter Heating Payment may apply.

3. Have I reached the qualifying age?

Pension-age winter support may apply.

4. Could I get the Warm Home Discount?

This is separate from winter heating payments.

5. Am I struggling to pay even after receiving support?

If so, check grants, supplier help and Fuel Bank support.

Several forms of help can sometimes work together.

In Short

Winter heating support depends on where you live.

In Scotland, the main payments include:

Winter Heating Payment — £62

Child Winter Heating Payment — £265.50

Pension Age Winter Heating Payment — £105.55 to £316.70

These are the 2026–27 rates.

Elsewhere in the UK, different schemes apply.

Therefore, always check the current rules for your part of the country.

Most importantly, do not assume that one winter payment is all the help you can receive.

There may also be support with bills, debt and the cost of improving your home.
