A Simple Guide to Pressure, Bleeding, Cold Spots and Radiator Problems

Your boiler and radiators work together as part of the same central-heating system.

The boiler heats water, while the pump circulates that water through pipes and radiators around your home. The cooler water then returns to the boiler and the cycle begins again.

For this process to work properly, the system needs suitable water pressure and circulation.

However, pressure problems, trapped air and poor circulation can sometimes prevent radiators from heating properly.

The good news is that some basic checks are relatively simple.

This guide explains what boiler pressure means, why it changes, how to recognise common radiator problems and when you should seek professional help.

What Is Boiler Pressure?

Many modern central-heating systems are sealed systems.

This means the water circulating between the boiler and radiators is contained within a closed circuit and maintained under pressure.

Your boiler will normally show this pressure on either:

  • A pressure gauge
  • A digital display
  • The boiler’s control screen

The reading is usually shown in bar.

Importantly, this is the pressure of the water in your central-heating system.

It is not the same as the pressure of the water coming from your taps.

What Should Your Boiler Pressure Be?

There is no single pressure setting that applies to every boiler.

However, many sealed heating systems operate at around 1 to 1.5 bar when the system is cold.

The pressure will normally rise somewhat when the heating is running because water expands as it becomes warmer.

Therefore, don’t be surprised if the pressure is higher when the radiators are hot than when the system is cold.

Always check the instructions for your particular boiler to find the recommended operating range.

Why Does Boiler Pressure Rise When the Heating Is On?

Water expands when it is heated.

Therefore, as the boiler heats the water circulating through your radiators, the system pressure normally increases.

Your heating system has an expansion vessel designed to accommodate this change.

As the system cools again, the pressure should fall.

A modest change between cold and hot conditions can therefore be completely normal.

However, a very large increase may indicate a problem that needs investigation.

What Happens If Boiler Pressure Is Too Low?

If the pressure falls below the boiler’s operating range, the boiler may stop working.

Depending on the model, you might notice:

  • A low-pressure warning
  • A fault code
  • Heating that will not start
  • A boiler lockout

Low pressure does not necessarily mean the boiler itself is faulty.

However, you need to understand why the pressure has fallen.

If it happens once after radiators have been bled, for example, that may have a straightforward explanation.

If it keeps happening, there may be an underlying problem.

Why Does Boiler Pressure Drop?

Pressure can fall for several reasons.

These can include:

  • Bleeding radiators
  • A small leak somewhere in the heating system
  • A leaking radiator valve
  • A problem with the boiler
  • A pressure-relief issue
  • Work recently carried out on the heating system

A small change over a long period may not necessarily indicate a serious fault.

However, repeated pressure loss should not simply be ignored.

If you continually repressurise the boiler without finding the cause, you may be masking a leak or another problem.

Check for Visible Leaks

If your boiler pressure keeps falling, look for obvious signs of water leakage.

Check around:

  • Radiator valves
  • Pipe joints
  • Visible heating pipes
  • The boiler area

Look for dampness, drips, staining or signs of corrosion.

However, not every leak is easy to see.

Some pipework may be underneath floors or behind walls.

Therefore, an absence of visible water does not necessarily prove that the system has no leak.

How Do You Repressurise a Boiler?

Some sealed heating systems allow the householder to restore pressure using a filling loop or filling mechanism.

However, the design varies considerably between boilers.

You may have:

  • An external filling loop
  • A built-in filling device
  • A filling key
  • Levers or valves
  • Another manufacturer-specific arrangement

Therefore, we should not give one set of instructions and pretend it applies to every boiler.

Instead, check the user instructions for your exact boiler make and model.

Follow the manufacturer’s procedure carefully and stop once the correct cold pressure has been reached.

Don’t Keep Topping Up the Pressure

If you need to repressurise the system repeatedly, something may be wrong.

Adding water again and again does not repair the cause of the pressure loss.

Furthermore, repeatedly introducing fresh water into a heating system is not desirable because fresh water introduces additional oxygen and minerals, which can contribute to corrosion and other problems over time.

Therefore:

Occasional repressurising after a known event may be understandable.

Regularly having to repressurise the boiler needs investigation.

What If the Pressure Is Too High?

High pressure can also indicate a problem.

If the pressure becomes excessive, the system has safety measures designed to protect it.

For example, a pressure relief valve can discharge water if necessary.

However, you should not deliberately release water from the boiler or interfere with its safety devices simply to reduce a pressure reading.

If the pressure repeatedly rises too high, seek professional advice.

Possible causes can include problems with the expansion vessel, filling mechanism or other parts of the system.

Understanding Your Radiators

Radiators are designed to transfer heat from the hot water circulating through them into your rooms.

Ideally, a radiator should warm reasonably evenly.

However, the exact temperature will not necessarily be identical across its entire surface.

What matters is recognising unusual patterns.

Where a radiator is cold can provide useful clues about what may be happening.

Radiator Cold at the Top

If a radiator is warm at the bottom but noticeably cold at the top, trapped air may be preventing hot water from filling the radiator properly.

In this situation, the radiator may need bleeding.

Bleeding releases trapped air from the radiator so water can circulate through it more effectively.

This is one of the most common radiator problems householders can identify themselves.

How to Bleed a Radiator

Before bleeding a radiator, check the instructions for your heating system and make sure you are comfortable carrying out the task.

Generally, the heating should be switched off and the radiators allowed to cool before you begin.

You will normally need:

  • A radiator key or suitable tool for the valve
  • A cloth
  • A small container

Carefully open the bleed valve slightly.

You may hear air escaping.

Once the air has escaped and water begins to appear, close the valve again.

Do not remove the bleed valve completely.

Afterwards, check the boiler pressure because releasing air can cause the system pressure to fall.

If necessary, follow your boiler manufacturer’s instructions for restoring the correct pressure.

What If You Keep Having to Bleed Radiators?

Occasionally bleeding a radiator can be normal.

However, radiators should not continually fill with air.

If you repeatedly need to bleed the same radiator or several radiators, there may be an underlying problem.

Therefore, rather than treating repeated bleeding as routine maintenance, consider having the system investigated.

Radiator Cold at the Bottom

A radiator that is hot at the top but cold across a significant part of the bottom may have a different problem.

One possible cause is sludge or deposits inside the radiator or heating system.

Over time, corrosion products and other material can accumulate and restrict circulation.

Importantly, bleeding the radiator will not normally solve this problem because bleeding removes air, not sludge.

A useful general distinction is:

Cold at the top → trapped air may be the cause

Cold at the bottom → restricted circulation or sludge may be the cause

However, these are clues rather than a complete diagnosis.

One Radiator Is Completely Cold

If one radiator remains cold while the others heat normally, several things could be responsible.

For example:

  • A TRV may be closed
  • A valve may be stuck
  • The lockshield valve may be incorrectly adjusted
  • Air may be trapped
  • Water circulation may be restricted

Start with the simple controls.

Check that the TRV is not set to its lowest or frost-protection setting.

However, don’t start dismantling valves or forcing components if you are unsure what you are doing.

What Is a TRV?

A thermostatic radiator valve, or TRV, controls the flow of hot water through an individual radiator according to the temperature around the valve.

As the room approaches the selected temperature, the valve can reduce the flow through the radiator.

Therefore, a radiator becoming cooler does not necessarily mean something is wrong.

The TRV may simply have decided that the room is warm enough.

This is why radiator temperature should always be considered alongside the room temperature and TRV setting.

What Is the Lockshield Valve?

At the opposite end of many radiators from the TRV is another valve, usually covered by a small cap.

This is commonly called the lockshield valve.

Unlike a TRV, it is not intended for everyday temperature adjustment.

Instead, it is used to regulate water flow through the radiator as part of balancing the heating system.

Changing lockshield settings without understanding their purpose can upset the balance of the system.

Therefore, don’t treat the lockshield as another ordinary radiator control.

What Does Balancing Radiators Mean?

Hot water will naturally follow the easiest routes through a heating system.

As a result, radiators close to the boiler or pump may receive more flow than radiators farther away.

Balancing adjusts the flow through individual radiators so heat is distributed more appropriately around the system.

A poorly balanced system may result in:

  • Some radiators heating very quickly
  • Other radiators taking much longer
  • Rooms heating unevenly
  • Poor circulation through distant radiators

Balancing is different from bleeding.

Bleeding removes trapped air.

Balancing adjusts water flow.

These two tasks solve different problems.

Do Radiators Need to Be Hot Everywhere?

Not necessarily.

Water cools as it passes through a radiator because the radiator is transferring heat into the room.

Therefore, some temperature difference across the radiator is expected.

Likewise, modern heating systems can operate effectively with radiators that feel warm rather than extremely hot.

The important question is whether the room reaches the temperature you want efficiently and comfortably.

A radiator does not need to be painfully hot to be doing its job.

Why Are All My Radiators Cold?

If every radiator is cold, the problem is less likely to be one individual radiator.

Instead, check the wider heating system.

For example:

  • Is the boiler running?
  • Is there a fault code?
  • Is the thermostat calling for heat?
  • Is the heating schedule on?
  • Is the system pressure within the recommended range?
  • Has the boiler locked out?

What If Radiators Make Noise?

Radiators and heating pipes can sometimes make noises as the system heats and cools.

For example, you may hear:

  • Ticking
  • Clicking
  • Gurgling
  • Flowing water
  • Occasional expansion noises

Some sounds can be caused by normal thermal expansion.

However, persistent gurgling may suggest air in the system, while unusual or severe noises may justify further investigation.

Do not assume every noise means the boiler is faulty.

Instead, consider where the noise is coming from and when it happens.

Radiators and Boiler Flow Temperature

Radiators do not always need extremely hot water.

Modern condensing boilers can often operate more efficiently at lower heating-water temperatures when the property and radiator system allow it.

Therefore, cooler radiators are not automatically a sign of poor performance.

If your rooms reach their desired temperature comfortably, the system may simply be operating at a lower flow temperature.

What About Radiator Covers?

Radiator covers can change how heat moves into a room.

A radiator heats a room partly by warming surrounding air and partly through radiant heat.

Therefore, a poorly designed cover can restrict airflow or trap heat.

Curtains and furniture can cause similar problems.

For better heat distribution, avoid unnecessarily blocking radiators with:

  • Large furniture
  • Heavy curtains
  • Clothes
  • Poorly ventilated covers

This is particularly important around TRVs because trapped warm air can affect the temperature sensed by the valve.

Should You Dry Clothes on Radiators?

Drying wet clothes directly on radiators can restrict heat transfer into the room.

It also releases moisture into the indoor air.

Therefore, regularly covering radiators with wet washing can make heating less effective while increasing indoor humidity.

If you dry clothes indoors, ventilation and moisture management become particularly important.

Don’t Ignore Corrosion

Rust, staining or corrosion around a radiator or valve can indicate that water has been escaping.

Even a very small leak can contribute to gradual pressure loss.

Therefore, don’t simply wipe away recurring moisture and forget about it.

If you repeatedly see water, staining or corrosion around a heating component, investigate the cause.

When Should You Get Professional Help?

Some radiator and pressure problems go beyond simple household checks.

Consider professional help if:

  • Boiler pressure repeatedly falls
  • Pressure repeatedly rises too high
  • Water is leaking from the system
  • Several radiators remain cold
  • Radiators repeatedly fill with air
  • A radiator remains cold despite basic checks
  • You suspect sludge or poor circulation
  • The boiler repeatedly locks out
  • You are unsure how to repressurise the system safely
  • You suspect a problem inside the boiler

If your heating is not behaving normally, start with the symptom.

Boiler pressure low
Check for obvious leaks and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Pressure keeps falling
The system needs further investigation.

Pressure rises excessively when heating
Seek professional advice.

Radiator cold at the top
Trapped air may be present.

Radiator cold at the bottom
Sludge or restricted circulation may be involved.

One radiator completely cold
Check the TRV and basic controls first.

Some radiators hot, others slow or cool
The system may need balancing or further investigation.

All radiators cold
Check the boiler, thermostat, heating schedule and system pressure.

These are useful starting points rather than guaranteed diagnoses.
